Investigating the unaccounted ones: insights on age-dependent reproductive loss in a viviparous fly

چکیده

Most empirical and theoretical studies on reproductive senescence focus observable attributes of offspring produced, such as size or postnatal survival. While harder to study, an important outcome reproduction for a breeding individual is whether viable produced at all. prenatal mortality can sometimes be directly observed, this also indicated through increase in the interval between production. Both direct loss presumed losses have been found older females across several species. Here, we study (or “abortion”) tsetse, viviparous relatively long-lived fly with high maternal allocation. We consider how age-dependent patterns abortion depend developmental stage find that, per previous laboratory studies, higher rates late-larval stage, while egg-stage abortions are both very young females. track output little evidence that experiencing adaptive strategy improve future outcomes. After abortion, do not generally take less time produce their next offspring, these larger, there no sex bias towards females, fitness returns (being slightly larger longer-lived than males, insemination rates). Abortion stress, measured nutritional deprivation, which echoes work tsetse other species, i.e., humans baboons. discuss our results context taxa argue yet often overlooked trait vary age environmental stressors.

Reproductive Adaptations among Viviparous Fishes (cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae).

Within the family Poeciliidae, a wide range of adaptations accompanying viviparity has evolved. The reproductive mechanisms of five representative species were examined and related to the habitats in which they are employed. Poecilia reticulata, the guppy, represents the majority of poeciliids which have a single stage of embryos in the ovary at a time. Most of the nutrients are prepack-aged in...

Mating does not influence reproductive investment, in a viviparous lizard.

Mating is crucial for females that reproduce exclusively sexually and should influence their investment into reproduction. Although reproductive adjustments in response to mate quality have been tested in a wide range of species, the effect of exposure to males and mating per se has seldom been studied. Compensatory mechanisms against the absence of mating may evolve more frequently in viviparo...

Eutherian-like reproductive specializations in a viviparous reptile.

The viviparous Brazilian scincid lizard Mabuya heathi exhibits a suite of reproductive specializations widely believed to be confined to the eutherian mammals. This skink ovulates the smallest known reptilian egg ( approximately 1.0 mm in diameter). Placental transport accounts for >99% of the dry mass of the periparturient fetus, representing a degree of placentotrophy proportionately greater ...
